Searchengines are more than just a website with a big database. Somehow all these billions of pages have to be added the database. That is where crawlers come into view. Crawles crawl the web (they retrieve pages) store the pages in the index and extract links to get more pages.
Not all searchengines are crawler based but the most important Google is and a lot of others like Alta Vista, Lycos or Fireball are. Most of them claim to follow links but that is not true in all cases. So it is advisable to use the submit function of these searchengines.
Some offer a Paid Incluion program where you can submit pages to the engine and pay to be included. Unlike the free submission this one comes with a garantee to be included in the index. But not with a garantee to be among the top results. So you still have to go through the optimization process.
Some Crawler will visit your pages regulary but most only occasionally. A few will propagte changes of your website to their database but a lot will not. That means it is very important to get your entries right in first place. Every other approach will be a stress test to your patience.
Now that your website made it to the major craler base searchengines let'S look what other searchengine can do for you. Directories are the other type of searchengine with a total different approach and total different requirements.
